Did they have the same engine? Should a damper pulley (harmonic balancer, crankshaft pulley, whatever you want to call it) for an 87 model work as well on the 89 model?

I think there was a redesign in 1988.
Yes, the crankshaft pulley should be interchangeable.

The engines are virtually identical, just a few small updates. Damper pully from an older B230 will work fine on a newer one.
