'89 740 wagon (Estate)

I have a chance to get an '89 740 wagon for $300. The engine has been replaced about 40,000 miles ago, with 40,000 on it (80,000 now)

It is in decent shape. Needs paint (this I can do) and seems to need springs. Interior is ok, nothing spectacular. The car was not well maintained lookswise. It seems to run well.

There is a whine from the engine, not the turbo, but something more gutteral. More like a pulley or similar.

What are common problems with this car. I just want something to hop in and drive 20 miles to work and back, maybe do a round trip of 80. I don't need to be putting *any* money into it. Ideas?

I would be suspicious of any car showing such a low mileage reading with such a poor condition. Are you sure that it reads 80,000 miles and not 800,000 miles?

Cheers, Peter.

Oh, no. The clock shows 232,000. The motor was changed 40,000 miles ago, with about 43,000, so it's really about 85K on the motor. But the chassis has 232,000.

I've had a 740 (uk model) for 15 years now and it's done me good service. Except for usual service items, exhaust, tyres, pads etc. I've spent very little money on it. The 1988 version does have problems with the fuel guage ceasing to work (printed circuit) but apart from that, no problem. I understand that the V engines could be bad news, but at 40k it should be ok. rear springs do go, self levellers (nivomats) can be expensive!

I've recently bought an 850 but couldn't bear to get rid of the 740 so now I've got two volvos. There's a world of difference between the two.

Best of luck!

Roy
