I need to buy a new (or remfg) A/C compressor for my 86 740. Need a recommendation for source, pref. California.

and enter your zip code. Choose Air Conditioning and then Compressor w/ Clutch.
Once you have a compressor, you can order it online or pick it up at one of their stores. If $312.99 is too high check your area for a discount import/foreign auto parts store.
