A Volvo diesel

If I wanted to have a diesel engine Volvo is there a better engine besides the six cylinder VW one that gives much trouble which fits a Volvo without too much major surgery? Would a Mercedes or Toyota work?

I've heard of a Mercedes Diesel being installed in a 240 but I'm not sure how much work it was, probably quite a bit of custom fabrication. I didn't know Toyota made a Diesel?

There is very little wrong with a post '93 VW diesel, provided that you get rid of the EGR which is all but useless. It has larger swirl chambers, hydraulic tappets and a cambelt tensioner separate from the water pump. In TIC form it gives 122 bhp from the factory but can be tuned quite successfully (VW got 225 bhp from this engine) with a quite enormous increase in torque compared to the 2.5 Audi/VW five cylinder offering. My own car is pushing out 145 bhp and is difficult to hold back to 60 mph when towing my caravan on motorways. I kept up with an empty articulated vehicle (owned by Norbert Dentresangle) in third gear on the southerly exit from Chepstow, which as you may or may not know is quite steep whilst towing my 1 ton caravan.

However, there are several diesel engines that should fit with a little engineering know-how, such as Mercedes, Toyota, Nissan. I am sure that if you could afford one even a VW V10 diesel will fit nicely, or even the V8 Audi.

All the best, Peter.

I guess it depends on where this guy is, if he's in NA then he can't get anything newer than '86.

Hello.

I found this very interesting, as I have a D24T engine from a -93 760 in my -87 245, and have thoughts of getting more out of it. Do You have any more info, websites or so on?

Best regards Ola Valan

You need to find a diesel mechanic who thoroughly knows the fuel pump and is used to tuning it. My friendly turbo-diesel man is in Monmouth, South Wales. All the UK diesel tuners can be found listed in "Diesel Car", a four weekly publication. Check out

The electronic plug-in gizmos are useless with a mechanically fuelled engine like the D24. However the fuel pump (Bosch) is very amenable to being tuned and can produce improvements to match the electronic "re-mapping" with ease. All the best, Peter.
