Has anyone replaced the carpet in a 940 sedan?

I have a '95 940 sedan with carpet that is getting a little too worn. I've googled for a replacement source and found surprisingly few. The ones I did find would only mention carpet replacement kits for the 740. Would the 740 be an exact replacement for my 940? I can't be the only person that has worn through spots on a ten year old car! I saw a source listed on brickboard.com but (besides being one of the worst websites I've ever seen) it was little help.

If anyone has gone through this or knows of a source, please let me know.

Thanks for any help.

I've actually pulled the carpets out of my 740, washed them in my washing machine, and put them back. Not the mats, the actual carpet.

That being said, you might pull out the carpet, then order some replacement carpet of the same thickness and quality and use the old carpet as a pattern.

In the past, I once pulled the carpet out of a Ford Escort GT and replaced it with Berber -- just to do it.

There may be some cutting/shaping involved, but a large carpet needle and some heavy gauge thread and you can stitch it -- just follow the pattern.

My mats cover any wear spots, so I was happy to have clean carpets with the holes covered.

The Volvo sites mainly only have mats. This site doesn't have the molded carpet, but does have it to order off the roll:

This seems to have your carpet (but are out of stock):

Lastly, you might check with Nick at FCP Groton and ask. snipped-for-privacy@hotmail.com

I thought of just putting mats in but would prefer to replace it since it has holes all the way through on the drivers side and many stains (that won't come out with shampooing) in the rest of the car.

I'll consider taking it out and cutting a replacement myself but every ad I've found talks about "molded" replacements. I figured that must be an important feature.

Try this company. I have not used their products so I cannot vouch for them.

You could try ACC at 800-352-8216. They have listings for many vehicles.

Thanks John Don't know why I didn't see their site when I googled for car carpet. I still get the same story from them as all the others. No one lists carpet for the 940. Everyone lists carpet the 740 but, they can't tell me if one will fit the other.

Believe you me I am sure that they will fit as the car's dimensions are virtually identical.

All the best, Peter.

Did you call, or just look at the website? Some companies do not keep very up to date websites.

John I did call. The woman on the phone was adamant that they only list the 740 and would not guarantee the fit if purchased for a 940.

I repeat, there is no discernible difference between 740 carpets and 940 carpets, possibly the only difference being in what is underneath the carpets.

All the best, Peter.

Remember 'The Hunting of the Snark'? You have to tell him three times :-)

Thanks Andrew. Actually I don't have to be told three times. I was responding to John's question as to whether or not I had called ACC directly.

Peter, thank you for your opinion that there is "no discernible difference between 740 carpets and 940 carpets" I was not ignoring your post. It's just been a bit busy for me on this holiday weekend.

I have to admit I would feel a little better if the merchants that sold the product were more aware of it's application potential. After all the last new 940 was sold in the U.S. about ten years ago... I would think that there is a market for restoration cosmetics as much as there is for water pumps.

Regardless, I've contacted a few of the online distributers and asked for samples of their carpet colors. I'll post the results of this project at completion. Which may take some time now that my gargage reaches 100º F in the day!

thanks don b.

Don, sorry to hear of the sweltering conditions in your garage. We reached nearly 30 Celsius today here in South Wales UK. Hope you have some luck with obtaining the carpets. Have you tried IPD? They are Volvo specialists and their URL is

Peter I love IPD. They must love me too considering all the catalogs they send me... I have gotten a few things from them but, carpet doesn't seem to be their forte'.

As an aside, one of the most valuable things (information wise) I have gotten from my IPD catalogs is that for some reason there is a substantial difference between the '95 940's and all the rest. As an example I wanted to install keyless entry in my car. IPD offers a kit for the 940. Except for the '95 940. I called and asked if it was some small reason that I could easily overcome. I was just told that the kit would not work in my car. As I looked through the catalog I noticed many parts were either not available or different for the '95 version of the 940. After 13 years of owning a '87 740T I find this incredibly frustrating. Actually I thought that I had found the perfect 940 considering it was the last year available in the U.S. and so should be the standard of a long run of such a great car. So much for best laid plans...

My sympathy (tung in cheek) for your 86º weather. But, in all seriousness I suspect in Wales you are not prepared to deal with uncomfortably warm temperatures as we are here in Florida. I'm sure it has nothing to do with global warming (which my government denies exists)... And as a native Floridian I should be used to the heat here. But, truth be told I think I got more than my fair share of my grandfathers Liverpool genes.

Thanks for your help. You have been and continue to be a great source of information.
