I'm joining the volvo world

Good day all,

I just purchased a Canadian 1995 850 gle non-turbo wagon. I'm looking forward to many years with it. Is there anything I need to look out for?

Thanks Eric

My experience with the non-turbo 855 is that it's a solid vehicle. My

97 has 80K miles on it and has only needed those long PLASTIC strips along the top (damned expensive parts for plastic), the driver's door stop thingy (whatever it's called) and the odometer gear (a 100 USD PART. Labor is another 300 USD).

Arguably, I could have done all of these myself but, at 62, I no longer pine for the chance to work on my car. I have a good independent mechanic who does most all routine maintenance. The above items were taken to the dealer and I felt properly reamed in the process.

If yours has been properly maintained to this point, you should have many years of happy motoring (until your yankee salt kills the poor beast (I live in Texas where salt is unheard of. I used to live in Minnesota. Salt is only a part of why I moved.)

Yours is right at the end of the run of 850s that experienced early hydraulic lifter failure. For that reason I'd be extra careful about regular oil changes, and use 5W-30 premium oil even in Summer, if it doesn't use oil. If the car was run on sythetic already, great - keep using it. If not, I'd stick with premium non-synthetic. And don't worry too much: it was mainly a problem in the '93-'94 cars.
