Is anyone familiar with "pyrotechnic pretensioners" for seatbelts. I have them in my 2004 Camry. They are used to quickly take up the seatbelt slack in the event of a major front-end collision. Since these devices are explosive or at least contain a fom of explosive, I am wondering whether they are very noisy when they deploy (like, can they damage hearing)?

They are not that loud. A little above the sound of a .22 rifle or below .410 gauge shot gun going off. I have set them off for warranty return and they are not that loud. The sound of crunching metal along with front and/or side ari bags going off you would probably never even notice the pre-tensioner sound. Just remember, all of that noise, is the sound of Safety. BD
They are probably the same sort of equipment as used by Volvo and are only a small charge, detonated electrically, enough to push a piston some 4-five inches, dragging a steel cable with it to tighten the seat-belt roller. I think the noise of the discharge would be lost in the general noise of the cause of the tightening (crash stop etc.).
