S80 T6 engine mounts

Hi all, A question for the board. I have a 2000 S80 T6 with about 58k miles on it. In the almost 6 years (purchased in Sept 99) that I have owend it, I have replaced the engine/motor mounts 3 times. While I admit that I have a tendency to drive a little quickly, I do not "floor it". I also backed off a little bit on my acceleration after the first replacement a few years ago.

I just took it in for servicing and did the 3rd replacement. I asked the service person about the motor mounts for Volvos, and he said that I should expect to replace them every few years, and that it was normal for most Volvos, except the S40 and another model that I didn't recognize.

My husband thinks it is a deficiency in design. I am curious what other people have experienced with their Volvos. Overall, I love my car. I bought the extended warranty when the original warranty was almost up, and most stuff is covered, but that will expire at the end of 2006.

Thank you in advance for your help. Cynthia

i have a 00 w/135k miles...my mounts are up for replacement...the are worn "to the eye" so, we are replacing them.....

your t6 w/only 50k miles on the clock should have maybe gone through one set (imho)...3 in 50k miles would indicate something wrong...are you using a volvo dealer for service?...

Believe it or not, but our 2001 V70 2,4T experienced an engine mount fault just after 24000 kms. Or 2,5 years.

I specifically asked this a few weeks ago in Finland, where this guru of gurus told me quite frankly, that it's a known issue with our car. Looks like a fundamental design flaw to me. Never heard anyone complaining with similat probs with any make or model.

All this actually adds up with the sad story we've experienced with our our car lately. I do refuse to make final conclusions at this very point, but I'm starting to get a pretty good overall picture of the design flaws, which involve yearmodels 1999-2001.

The other ones seem to be:

  • ETM
  • automatic gearbox (especially 2001)
  • engine fan (recall earlier)
  • wheel alignment

Hope this cleared a few issues. Have a great weekend!

Yes, have used the Volvo dealer for all service, and I service regularly. The dealer is a reputable dealer. I wouldn't mind replacing once per 50k, but I am at once per 20k. Interested in other's experiences. Cynthia

Our 850 has been recalled twice. Both times the dealer said we needed mounts. The used Volvo shop I bought the car from said they were fine two times, as they took ~500 bucks for 30k services from me.

Hummmm.....

isnt it true that any seepage or spilliage of oil or tranny fluid on a engine mount will render them "failed" and subject to replacement?...

anyone expierencing this situation?

And if any toxic birthday cake is accidentally dropped on a motor mount the entire sub frame must be magnifluxed by an FAA certified specialist. If the car must be moved to an airport for this inspection to occur the car must be airlifted, since the FAA holds no authority over ground based transport, save for aircraft while they taxi about. In a similar vein the FAA specialist AND his equipment must be airlifted to the location where the car is if an on site inspection is to take place.

Be glad you do not have a SAAB, in cases where SAAB engine mounts are suspect all airlifting must be performed by a Saab aircraft!

It's expected that when Honda's new jet comes out the same precautions will apply to Hondas and Acuras, and a good thing too, for most Japanese motor mounts are very sensitive to sushi contamination.

The Saab 9-2 is a very complex issue that can not be discussed herein.

I suppose you mean the upper eng. mount. If you buy this item you won't have to change it anymore:

As I first read you post I thought, "DAMN! A woman who can go through motor mounts in 20,000 miles!? I wish I wans't married.. Then later, as I read alnog, "Oh, man! She's already married!" ;-)

I would have to say that even 50,000 miles for a set of motor mounts sounds rediculous, and 20,000 is a definite problem. I agree with your husband that this is a design flaw.

Here's one that's even worse: My mom has a 91 Taurus. She bought it new. It has rubber injected tie rod ends. If the rubber fails, the tie rod end separates resulting in loss of control. Maybe, in the case of your motor mounts, Ford's takeover is having an effect.

Clive, I actually had no symptoms two out of the three times. The second time, I would get a "thump" sound when making a sharp right hand turn. They were all covered under warranty, so I cannot imagine the dealer would be making a false report. Interested in your experience....how many miles on your car? Cynthia

Erik, thanks for the reference on these bushings, I will (actually, my husband will -- grin) check into it. Cynthia

Randy et all,

Righto, happily married to another thrill seeker :) We both like to ski fast and drive fast :) Shoot, I think I am fast, and then he beats me down the hill. My eyes water from the wind, blurring my vision, what the heck is happening with his eyes?

Ford takeover was after my purchase, but could affect replacement parts(which I hadn't thought of before, thank you for that).

I am thinking about your comment about tie ends....another comment was about the bushings....I know that I am not the only one who drives this car like I do.

I would REALLY like other S80 owners to tell me what they are experiencing.

I understand from your responses that 20k replacement on engine mounts is NOT normal.

Thank you everyone for your help.
