Service Engine Light On

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Car is 90 740 GLE 16V just turned

89K original miles. Thanx in advance.

Is it the service light, or the engine light, two very different things. The

The "SERVICE" light is a REMINDER to change your oil. It stays on about 5 min when you start the car. Some models have a reset button below the speedo, next to the trip-reset button. It comes covered with a rubber plug. Remove the plug and push the button with a small screwdriver. If you have a turbo the light returns in 5000 miles, non-turbo 10,000 miles. I don't know about

16Valve engines.

The "Check Engine" light is an ALARM. It signifies the need for a repair to the engine management system.

Al, the service light interval for 16v is 5,000 miles. I can't reset mine because the rubber stop in the glass (plastic?) is pushed all the way in and under. It's just annoying but it does turn off after a few minutes. I've just learned to ignore it.

Just push the button in & when you feel the need just remove the cluster separate the back & remove the rubber plug about a 1/2 hour of work for most people unless you are all thumbs then will take longer

If you get the answer to your questiion will you email me and let me know as well I have the same problem.

I own a 1990 GLE 16 value white in color with heated seats, Sunroof, 4 door.

Thanks,

Tony Grant
