volvo 440 turbo engine problems

the other night i went through a puddle and my car started to pop and bang. when i started it in the morning it was still a bit bangy but after about 5 mins the car filled up with smoke and smoke was coming out the engine bay and the engine is now clanging. can any body help please

thanks mike

I am hoping the engine didn't suck water and hydraulic lock. A compression test - a DIY test with the plugs out and cranking the engine is good enough - will determine whether to look farther. The cylinders should be within 10% of each other.
