Volvo S40 starting trouble

I had a similar issue with a Nissan a few years back. Solution was to pull the fuse for the fuel pump and try starting it. The car would start and run for a few seconds, just enough to drain all of the fuel out of the lines. Replace the fuse, hold the pedal to the floor and start the car. This model/year Nissan had the tendency to flood itself and this was the only way to clear it out.

Had a hard starting problem w/ my 01 S40 - it was the fuel pressure regulator.
