looking to buy one, new to Volvo, who makes the diesel engine and what bad points to look out for

Thanks JOHN

Who makes the diesel engine for these also is there anything to look out for when buying second-hand Thanks JOHN

Find one with at least the "Europe" package (includes electric windows, half-leather, airco etc etc) Often the ash-tray is broken in a second hand V40; try it out by pushing it. Also the fase 1 often has scales; the blanc laquer peels, on the center dashboard. The drivers armsupport is standard a bit weak. After a couple of years it will break off when leaning a bit to hard on it. The repair set is a quite a bit stronger version than the original. I had the engine checked by my garage, since I'm not into engines.

For the rest: great car! Drive one myself and have been looking for one for approx 5 months before I found the one I'm driving now

Regarding the diesel engine; I think fase 1 was supplied by renault. From fase 2 they were Volvo's own make. Not sure about the above though. Maybe someone can give better details on this.
