2000 GTI ...Brakes....

I have 56,000 miles on this GTI now and due to seemingly low pedal throw...seem to be needing a brake job. Does it make sense to have a VW dealer do the work.......Brake Pads and turning the rotors have been quoted to me by my VW dealer as costing $375........or should I simply have it done by a Brake specialist like Midas, etc, at half the cost?

Any advice would be much appreciated.....please e-mail me at..... snipped-for-privacy@cox.net

Personally, I'd have the job priced by a local independent if I didn't want to do the job myself. The dealer is always more than anyone else and as far as Midas goes, I wouldn't go to them for anything. At least the shops around here. I did the brakes on my friends Jeep Cherokee, new pads, shoes, rotors and drums, bled the system etc. because he was getting high quotes to get them done. I found out later that a month later he had it in Midas and he asked them to look at the brakes because they would squeak intermittently. They told him that he needed new pads, rotors etc. He (and this definitely proved it to me once and for all) ok'd them to do the work and 6 or 700 bucks later he had his second new set of brakes for the month. I couldn't believe he fell for it. I asked him if they returned his old parts because I wanted to look at them. Of course, they didn't. I think they just put on some of that anti-vibrate stuff on the disc brakes up front and told him they replaced everything. Anyhoo...I would check into a local independent if you're not going to do it yourself. Good Luck, Bryan
