2002 Jetta Brake Pedal Problem

Hi!

I am experiencing a small problem with the brake pedal in my 2002 Jetta 1.8T. When I press the brake pedal lightly, frequently upon releasing the pedal it does not return to the full up position and I find that the brakes are still applied. If I put my foot behind the brake pedal I can push it back up to its full up position and the brakes are no longer applied. This only happens when I press on the pedal lightly. If I apply full force to the brake pedal, upon releasing it, it always returns to its full up position and the brakes release completely. I took the car into my local dealer and they said they could not reproduce the problem and that the brake system was functioning within factory specs. After further explanation of the problem the service consultant seemed to understand what I was talking about but had no idea what could be causing the problem. He said he would look into it and give me a call. I'm still waiting.

Has anyone else had a similar problem, or have any ideas what might be causing the problem?

Thanks!

So did you get a answer to your problem?

No not yet, but I'm supposed to take my car back to the dealer this Thursday. The service consultant said he had someone coming in from VW that he wanted to have look at the problem.

It sounds like they are concerned or incompetant. At least you can still drive it.

I had a similar problem once, it was caused by the brake light switch. Might be worth checking to see if the switch actuator retracts smoothly and fully.

There's a recall on the switch now, too.

I also had the same problem on my '01 Jetta, where the clutch pedal would not return fully, due to a broken switch having to do with the cruise control.

You need a new brake booster. I would replace the brake pedal to (remember to specify auto or manual) because of the clip in the peda to hold the pushrod. I had an A4 Jetta last week do the same thing HTH From VWsport.com NNTP Gateway

Maybe. That's why they are bringing in a VW rep to take a look at it. This could be a sign of another bad hardware product that is potentially unsafe.
