All dealers would like to sell for MSRP which gives the most profit. As for what you can get it for that all depends where you and the dealer meet in the middle of the road. Best thing to do is shop around at various dealers. Nothing changed since the birth of the auto buying process. Question: How successful have you been when shopping at Sears, Bestbuy, CompUSA, or the local grocery shop at negotiating a lower price on a product you wanted?

Very! At Bestbuy and CompUSA you can get lower prices if you bring in a competative price. Example. A neighbor bought a wide screen TV from Bestbuy after showing the military PX discount which was over $700 less. He got that price. Another example. The differences between brick and morter prices and net prices on Jeep accessories are remarkable. I just bring in the cheapest net price I can find to the local store and they honor it.

I was quoted a below-invoice price earlier today, but told there would be a "$399 document-processing" fee in addition to tag and title. Is this a normal fee charged when purchasing a new car?

Thanks,

No....That is a load of crap!

That's way to much for a doc fee. In PA they charge anywhere from $25 to $55. In NJ it can be $150 to a ripoff $300.

When we bought our NB back in July of 2003, the admin fee was $20

Well, this is a little off the subject, but in my opinion, the Golf with the 2.0 engine and automatic is underpowered, especially when compared to the competition. When we were shopping for a Jetta last year, my daughter drove a 2.0 first and then a 1.8T, both automatic. The 1.8 T was so superior in terms of drivability that she wouldn't even consider the 2.0 any further. I went along for the "test drive" and it really was a night and day difference.

I'm not sure that the 1.8T is available in the Golf except for the GTI model (the car that I'd like to have), but the TDI might be worth looking at since it has much more torque than the 2.0 gas engine...and much better fuel economy.

You test drove a brand new 2.0L... They are unbelievably tight engines when new.... We've put 4500kms on our 2003 Golf 2.0L and it's just now starting to really loosen up and give good performance and fuel economy.

The first time I merged onto the highway with our, it had maybe 120kms on the engine... 3rd gear, 70kph... 4th gear... 80, climbing slowly, ramp running out... oh hell, merge anyways, no one behind me 100kph as we were already into the right lane... 115 as I went to the middle lane.... It didn't really want to go any faster then that, I was disapointed because our old 1991 1.8L could have been up to 120kph screaming in 3rd by the end of that offramp, or nicely churning in 4th at around 115. Now that it has nearly 5000kms on it, it at least equals our old Golf, probably betters it in acceleration (and its a lot quieter).

But then again, my boss who has a 1.8T has said the same thing with his car - it took a good 5000kms for the engine to really start to break in.

Our NB sucks...it's a 2.0L and the fuel economy and performance are so sporadic. Great one day, crappy the next. The fuel economy is horrible, yet no dealer can find any problem....

Wishing that we had gone for the TDI!

I've been playing with the TCM....I've got the shift points changed somewhat, so it's not as lethargic....

But the TDI would have been a much better choice... :-(

..snip..

Well, my 95 Golf is a 2.0 5 speed and it's fine although certainly not overpowered. I find that it is most lacking in the 0 - 25 mph (more or less) range. I have to "dog" it to keep up with traffic accelerating away from a traffic signal. But once it's moving well, it's fine. At interstate speeds it's very peppy, and my "merging" experiences more or less parallel yours. However, with an automatic and three people in the car, there's no question in my mind that the 1.8T has much greater drivability especially in traffic. VW really needs to have a base engine with more power than the 2.0.

I hear something better is coming... Something like a 2.0FSI engine with

150hp.... Speculations of course, from my dealer. I've also heard a 1.6 might be availible?? And a 5 cylinder engine.... So who knows...

I think it's pretty much certain the old 2.0 won't be availible in the Golf
