40mph & shut down

jetta drives up to 40mph and than it starts to shutdown. what can be causing this?

I don't know what you mean by shutdown, but a clogged fuel filter can have a symptom that could fit your description. This would assume that "shutdown" means sputters and loses power but does continue to run.

If shutdown means the engine dies, then this would not apply.

Germen cruise control! Drive 39MPH! Would be great to know what kind of car and year it is!

If you have an automatic trans and drive with your left foot on the brake, could you hitting the brake and accelerator at the same time? Cheers, jc
