87 Jetta oil leak behind warm up regulator?

Hey everyone,

It's been awhile since i've posted on the boards. I guess that's a good thing though, because that means my car hasn't been acting up on me. Unfortunatly I have a little bit of a problem. I keep having to add a quart of oil to my car every 100 miles or so, because my oil buzzard starts coming on like crazy (although I can clear it by reving the engine) and my lifters begin to tap. After adding a quart of oil the car is fine for a few weeks until I hit 100 miles or so. Basically I have a leak. The car doesen't appear to be burning oil as the exhaust is very clean. I looked at my engine and I'm thinking it's coming from behind the warm-up regulator that is on the block. I looked on my

*cough* copy *cough* of ETKA and it appears that there is a round gasket behind the warm up regulator. Does anyone know if this is an oil seal of sorts. If so I'll be ordering one.

So basically to get to the point, does anyone know if that gasket actually stop oil or what. What is it's purpose. It doesen't look like it'd be too hard to get to, and i'm tired of buying oil, and having a stockpile of it in my backseat, it's not good for the ladies :) Thanks!

Yes, that gasket stops oil. You'll note that the warm up regulator bolts to a plate that is bolted to the block. That plate covers the hole used for the fuel pump on the carbureted cars. If the gasket under the plate fails you'll get an oil leak as that hole goes directly into the crankcase.
