I have a 91 vw passat and half the time, it turns over really hard a few times then, turns over reaaly fast but not vatch til 20 seconds later and all I can smell is gas. what could be causing this? it's really embarasing. it's a really nice car. it's also dead on the bottom end. but once the reves are up, it gets lots of power. like boosters kicking in. thanks for any and all help.

Might be battery, cables, dirty connections or you could tune it up! If it is a 16V engine, remember to change that timing belt every 40-50K miles. ;-)
