91 Passat will not when hot

Hello Group, I've been reading posts on this subject all day, "Passat hot and will not start". It seems that there are so many things that can cause this. Here is my situation:

'91 Automatic Passat that will not start when hot. When it does start it will drive for a little bit before it heats up to a point were I'm forced to turn the car off to let it cool off. Of course it will not start back up while it's hot. I've replaced the fuel pump that is in the trunk and I have also replaced the battery and starter on this car.

I've read several posts in this group surrounding this subject. A lot of the subjects are similiar to what I'm experiecing now. If anyone has a path that I should pursue when it comes to troubleshooting this issue I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks VW frustrated.

Thanks for your response. Sorry that my initial post was vague. Here are the answers to your questions:

how is the coolant level? The coolant level is fine.... does the radiator get hot in all four corners? Will check this...... does the radiator fan come on at all Yes. Both Radiator fans come on........ where is the needle on the temperature gauge? The temp needle is under the 'half-way' mark.....

When I turn the key in the ignitition the engine acts like it wants to turn over. I don't hear any clicking noise as if the starter was going out. It sounds like it is starving for gas when I attempt to start it. There is a half a tank of gas in the car so it is not on empty......

I drove the car this past Saturday. It didn't overheat. I turned the car off and tried to restart it. No dice. The car was 'hot' from driving it around but the temp needle didn't indicate that it was overheating. I haven't been able to restart the car ever since. It suffers from the symptoms that I listed earlier...

Is there anything that I should look for? Any other information that I can provide?

Thanks in advance, Dee

Thanks for the responses. Here's the latest:

I've checked the battery, starter, and ignition. All is well. I've changed the battery cables. So we're good there. Here is the latest symptoms:

Car wants to turn over but doesn't. Seems like it is starving for gas. There is a half of a tank of gas in there. I purchased some starter spray. This starts the engine for about two - four seconds, sounds good before the engine dies as if it's not getting anymore gas.

It seems like something in the fuel system. I just do not know what?? Could it be a fuel relay? A bad fuse? Like I said before the fuel pump in the trunk has checked out ok. I've looked around for a Passat service manual and cannot find one in the city of Portland, Or. If anyone knows any good links to service manual information on the web then feel free to post it. lol

Any clues, ideas, suggestions, or instructions are always appreciated.

Regards, Dee

I forgot to tell you to check the large rubber boot from the fuel distributor to the intake manifold. Might be cracked or loose and that may cause your problem too. You could bypass the fuel pump relay and supply power to the fuel pumps to eliminate the relay as a possible problem or confirm it. It does sound like a fuel delivery problem. Maybe the residual pressure is bleeding down. Might be defective fuel injectors, or fuel pump check valve, or fuel accumulator, or ???

I had the same problem. After driving for 45 min the car would loose power and I would have to let it cool down to drive again. This was going on for about a week and then the car would not start. It was the other fuel pump, not the one in the trunk.

Could be the fuel pump relay, the ignition switch, bad wiring to or at the fuel pump. Other possible problems have been posted by others, too
