94 Jetta clutch and transmission

My 94 Jetta with 160,000 is stuck in gear. The car cannot be moved and someone has to sit in the driver's seat to disengage the clutch. The dealer says the external linkages need replacing but wants to replace the whole transmission and clutch for $2750 with a rebuilt transmission and inclusive of taxes. I have no problems with replacing the clutch - it's still original after 160,000 miles, but the transmission - is replacement reasonable? How about the price?

Alternatively, can anyone recommend a good transmission shop in Central/Northern New Jersey?

TIA

I have a used transmission that was an extra for my daughter's car and will sell for $550! It's a DFQ code and was from a 96-97 jetta but fits most years from 93-99. I'm 3 hours west of Harrisburg PA. E-mail if interested.

The external linkages need replacing but he wants to replace the transmission too? That's nuts!

Does he know that the transmission is bad or he's just guessing? If the external linkages are the problem then all you need is new linkage pieces. Those are very inexpensive.

According to the dealer (!) failure of the external linkages can also be caused by, or cause, internal damage in the transmission. Of course their chosen remedy is to just to replace the transmission as they won't be able to tell whether the transmission is bad until they do the external linkages and the car is still stuck in gear. Then I'll have to pay the labor all over again to pull and replace the transmission.

Come on AFAIK all that needs to be done to check the trans is to disconnect the linkages at the transmission and work the gears by hand.

I do wonder about the "stuck in gear" also. I don't think that I have seen this on a watercooled yet unless the oil left the trans. It sounds like the clutch is not the real problem, but if the trans gets pulled then replace clutch and seals.

If you need a trans then Woodchuck offered one of his and I would trust his used trans over an unknown one.

Let us know what happens, but if you leave it at the dealer you might be paying as much as the Jetta is worth. 8^)

That's what I said they should do, but dealer said it couldn't be done like that

My feelings exactly, the clutch still works OK, but after 160,000 miles I'd have it replaced if the transmission is going to be pulled..

take it somewhere else! And if the clutch is working you can drive it slowly elsewhere. ;-)

What is a 94 Jetta worth on the open market?
