No trouble lights so far , but the alternator is making a lot of noise (roaring) and i can feel vibration from it. What'ya think the problem is? bearing, brushes?? total replace or what? cost of rebuilt one? thanks, bill

maybe serpentine belt tensioner. I think I have started replacing those in the VR6 and 2.0 engines.

bill an alternater can have a bad bearing and still charge fine

if your vehicle has (individual belts running acceseries) and is not equipe with a serpentine belt that drive all acceseries then the easies test you can do is take off the drive belt start it for a moment and see if the noise goes away if you hear no noise its the alternater take it off and get it rebuilt

Enough already. It's most likely your AC compressor. Buy a large adjustable and adjust it around the bend bar of the tensioner while the engine is running. Move the tensioner to loosen the belt a bit and magically the noise goes away. It's the strain on your AC compressor that makes that whining noise. If your AC still works, turn it on and you will see that the whining noise almost goes away.

Any time a rotating item makes a roaring noise, you know the bearings are in trouble. It'll test fine.

Also, check to make sure you don't have the belt too tight -- that'll put pressure on the bearing and cause it to roar.

What? i replaced the alternator 4 days ago and yesterday the starter went up. i replaced it. thats $200 + $150 in four days for parts. i saw another post that the same thing happened to another guy. isnt it funny that both would die at the same time?? why is that??
