98 New Beetle Starter parts problem

Hi,

I posted here a few days ago with a question about how to remove the starter from my 98 Beetle.

That post was here but now seems to have gone into cyberspace. Didn't get a reply anyway. :-)

Well, I finally got the friggin thing out and had it checked at my local starter/alternator shop and was told it was fine, but it was determined that the bushing that supports the starter motor shaft out at the end near the bendix, needs replaced.

This bushing is the one that is pressed/driven into the bell housing. Mine seems to have vanished. The bored hole in the aluminum bell housing looks perfect. I don't know how to reach way in there to measure the hole.

The Beetle is one of the early 98's. I'm told about a month after mine was built, they went to another starter etc.

Any advice on where to get this bushing? My local tribe of boneheads in the parts dept of our VW dealership aren't coming through for me, (they carry a slew of brands, VW is only one, and no one is an expert on parts searching). NAPA etc. don't carry that part.

Thanks in Advance,

James
