A2 experts, need help, 91 Golf, running issues.

Our 91 Golf seems to be having some issues, especially when wet. The stormsystem from hurricane isabelle really made its problems come out, and therain we had today made them even worse. My dad has been driving this Golf,so I have not seen the problems myself, they are as follows.Stalling at intersections - on a standard transmission car.... my dad drovea non synchro beetle in his younger days, I think he can handle this car.The stalls happen at takeoff occasionally, the engine does not want to runproperly under 3500 rpm. He has been giving it more then adequate gas, butthis is going to abuse our clutch eventually. I don't think the engine hasstopped on its own before, while braking.A whinning noise from one of the belts, alternator light dimmlyilluminating, flickers occasionally. Whine is getting worse (more frequent)especially under heavier throttle, or when wet. Does this car have aseparate alternator belt, or is it all on the (5 month old) serpentine belt.We are going to get new plugs, wires, distributor cap, and if applicable analternator belt. Also, how hard is a timing belt to change.... I think oursis original. The plugs, wires, and distro are a good 5 years old, only 30000kms on them tho. Car has about 70000kms on it total, almost all stop andstart city driving, the last 25000kms have much more highway travel tho.When this car runs, it runs with so much strength and flexibility it makesus not want to invest money in a newer car.... but when it runs likethis.... a newer car looks quite tempting.

Nope. They don't even make a difference in terms of the HP.

In A2 G/J/GTI, the Digifant I has a throttle valve potentiometer instead of the idle and WOT switches, individual ground wires for individual monitoring of the fuel injectors (Digi II has one common ground wire for all injectors), and Digi I has some degree of storing fault codes and extracting them via a jumper wire and the Check Engine light. That's about it.
