I have a 97 Golf CL 1.8 manual and I need a new computer. The VW mechanic tracked the problem I am having down to a faulty computer. I found one on ebay for a 98 golf, 1.8, manual and was wondering if this would do, and could i just plug and play with it?

You need to match the part numbers, otherwise the computer may not be correct.
But before you buy a new computer, go to Radio Shack and buy some "Deoxit" and use the Deoxit to clean the connector terminals where the wiring harness connects to the computer. It may not work, but it can do no harm, and costs $15 and 20 minutes to do.
Probably wont work since the problem is there was a melting of some wires which crossed some low voltage with some high voltage wires and fried the computer.
