Coolant sensors question

I have a 2002 NB TDI. At the driver (US car) side of the engine where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine there are three sensors in that fitting. If I am seeing them correctly the two towards the front appear the same the the one towards the firewall appears slightly different. Can anyone identify those three sensors and which one, if any, might be related to an CEL code of P0118 Engine Coolant Temp - Circuit High Input



Note the engine temp light has never been triggered.

sensor is a 4 pin and should be black or green. The faulty ones were black.

It appears different models\years have different set ups. I found the reference to the four pin connector, It appears the has three contacts and a ground. I have three sensors, each with their own plug connector. Judging from the way it has been acting, it may be just a bad connection on the first sensor towards the front of the car. Both the first and second sensors give the same readings at two different temps and they are in the range expected for the sensor in question.
