CV Joints gone?

Driving normally around town. Started from a light, shifted into second then boom, no power and a all I hear is like a bucket of marbles rotating??? Engine revved, but went nowhere, only the marble sound. Just had Transmission replaced (used).

It's at my Mechanic now, won't be able to look at it till either Sunday evening or Monday Morning.

What could it be? CV Joint? Transmission? Something more serious?

I got the wife to try and drive it while looked down in the CV Area. The shaft coming out of the tranny moves around in a circular motion, but the shaft itself going to the wheel doesn't rotate???

I don't know if this makes sense or not? I only looked at it for a second.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks. Steve

It is, and sounds like his problem.

Had a similar thing happen to my Polo. I was visiting friends in Lancashire when I realised the MoT was due. Took it to a local garage. They said the rubber boots on the sriveshaft were split, so I told them to replace them. On the way home down the M6 at 70, there was a loud bang and no drive. Seems they had neglected to fully tighten the driveshaft bolts at the gearbox end on the nearside. Alas, the driveshaft had hit the gearbox and made a big hole in the casting. I hope this isn't what has happened to you!

*One* time I let a friend work on one side of the car after I rebuilt and reinstalled a close-ratio tranny. I didn't check his work and neither did he. Doing 140 km/h, 3 of the 6 inner CV-joint bolts came out and the washers splayed and ripped that same hole in the tranny. Very upsetting (but I did get pictures).

Well, got the car back today.

CV Joint blew up and bearings were everywhere, in the boot and everything. So anyway, he charged me 25 bux for a used one and that was it. Not bad. Even my tow was free!!

I'm happy about that. While it was in the shop, I got him to do Rear Axle bushings, Rear Wheel Bearings, Drivers Side Wheel Cylinder, Shoes and Hardware kit.

Runs like new again!!

Next is the front wheel bearings and Front motor mount!!

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.
