DTC P1296

My "Check Engine" light comes on just as I get home. The light goes off the next day. Coupla days later the light's back on.

I buy one of these diagnostic code scanners to see why the "Check Engine" light is on. It displays is P1296. I can't find P1296 in my Haynes repair manual, but I did find it at

formatting link
17704 P1296 Cooling system malfunction.

Unfortunately, the site has the disclaimer: Not all of the codes apply to the vehicles covered by this manual.

The cooling system seems to be working fine, plenty of coolant, engine (1.8L Turbo) not running hot.

So, does P1296 really apply to the New Beetle?

Should I be concerned?

Hello - I am a VW dealership technician, and from the description of your problem, I would guess that you have a faulty engine coolant temperature sensor. I would advise replacing it because ultimately it could affect engine cooling, fuel economy, and driveability. There is also a lesser chance of having a broken water pump impeller. ECT sensor and sealing o-ring should cost no more than $10, and should take only about 15 minutes to install. DO IT WHEN THE CAR IS COLD! There is no reason to drain the coolant, as long as you leave the filler cap on, and the engine has not been run in the previous 4 hours.
