Expected life of Oxygen Sensor, 96 2.0L Golf

Just wondering what the expected life of the original oxygen sensor is for the 2 liter engines put in '96 golf. I am approaching 100,000miles and wondered if it made sense to replace it as a maintenance issue prior to failure. Thanx in advance, Andy

They can last anywhere from 1000 miles to well over 100k miles. And yes I have replaced them at 1000 miles under warranty. Replacing it may pick up a few MPG.

I'm still on mine at 145K - haven't ever replaced it - which is probably not a good thing for the cat? Never failed emissions and my MPG hasn't really waivered since the car was new in 1995.
