Front Transmission mount on A1 Jetta

I started to change the front Transmission mount today... I supported the transmission and removed the air box & battery for access and removed the mount's thru-bolt and continued on to the two nuts/bolts that hold the bracket to the tranny. The one in the rear came out with a little peruading, but the front one hits the body's sheet metal before any threads are exposed. I tried wrestling the engine/trans about to make clearance, but no go. I gave up and was going to wait until I have the tranny out to change the clutch. The head of the bolt meets right where the sheet metal is folded/seamed and was worried about drilling a hole to take it out as that is probabally a high stress point for the frame. Is there something I am missing? The car hasn't been in a collision so body is straight.

Thanks in advance.

WOW it has been too long since I have changed the clutch on an A1. :-)

You should be able to lower the engine and trans enough to take out the two through bolts in the bracket/transmission. You might have to unbolt the rear mount from the body though.

good luck! later, dave Reminder........ Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them, and you have their shoes. Frieda Norris

It's been a while since I had the trans out of my convertible, but I think Dave is right. You need to lower the driver's side end of the engine/transmission unit. Support the engine and remove the "cup" from the front mount but leave the passenger side mount alone. I guess you could use a jack to support the trans as you lower it, but to make sure it didn't fall I would use my home made support: a length of pine 4x4 cut to fit on that little lip inside the front fenders. It has a hole drilled in it right over the liting point at the driver's side end of the engine. I use a long eye bolt and an S hook to connect to the lifting point. Turning the nut on the eye bolt lowers the engine and trans. You can access the bolt you're having trouble with thru the fender well.
