Head or Exhaust?

Apr 01, 2004 2 Replies

Something started to blow on my 106k VR6. It gets louder as the engine heats up. As i am going to strip it down for the chains and clutch i might as well fix it, if i only knew if it was only the exhaust manifold gasket or the head gasket... Tips anyone? Trying to avoid taking the head off... Bolly (best heard when labouring at low revs, a strong deep "V")

You need to do more diagnosis before taking things apart. If it's a headgasket then you should be loosing coolant too.

I'd say more likely to be exhaust manifold gasket or a cracked manifold or a leaking exhaust. I'd expect a head gasket only on a higher mileage engine or if something awful had happened like overheating or running too long w/o coolant.
