how to remove diff bearing race?

clutch mystery aside, and soon to be replaced, I have turned my attention to the tranny on the bench. I have significant play in the output shafts (radial) and will replace the diff bearings (only 70k miles on them), along with syncros. But how do I remove the bearing race when shimming up the final drive? I dont understand the tool shown in the bentley. Thanks.

I measured the diff bearings tonight as per the Bentley.  I found thatthey are .005 inch too loose.  That isnt much.  Also, while I hadtranny sitting on the bell housing and the passenger side output shaft,I noticed the same amount of play on the other output shaft.  Imaginethat this pressed the final drive against one side of the tranny caseand shimmed it up tight.  You would think that the shaft would then betight as well.  But is wasnt at all.  Because of this I am thinkingthat my diff housing or the shafts themselves are worn.  Keep in mindthat there is no bearings on the output shafts.  The tapered rollerbearings are pressed onto the diff housing.  Ill open it up to satisfymyself.  What do you guys think?  Are decent diff housings or shaftshard to find.     wrote:

It's normal for the output flanges to have some play. It's just how they are made!

It bugs me tho.  And this guy says there should be no play in theshafts.
