I have a 88 Jetta, with a bad ball joint. My supplier has sold me a MOOG K9601 ball joint that looks funny to me. The Boot extends all the way up the shaft that goes into the hub assembly. Is this pressed in, cut to size, or did he sell me the wrong one? Apparently there are two types.
Thanks for the help

The K9601 can be the correct one. On Moog's website I see 2 different part numbers listed and a VIN break.
K9601 - US - THRU CH#17J013200
or
K9603 - US FROM CH#17J013201 or GERMAN
The boot will squish down when it is installed, don't cut it. As for how it is installed, take a look at how the current one is mounted up. Pretty cut and dry. For some tips on getting the old on out, take a look at this:

While it deals mainly with a CV boot repair, there is some info on seperating the ball joint.
Don't forget to have the alignment taken care of when you are done.
Feel free to drop me a line if you have any other questions about this.
Later.
