I have a 99 New Beetle Auto. 1.8liter engine. When I turn on the A/C there is a terrible rattling sound. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Anyone had this happen? We do all the work ourselves, so any clues to diagnose the problem would be appreciated. Thanks!

How about your AC compressor, they can have an internail failure and do this, replaced a few myself.
If you do end up needing a compressor, I can get official rebuilt VW units for $300-ish, no core charge. These units came from VW, not a shadetree unit and are a direct replacement. They are all we use at our dealer, a lot easier to sell a $300 part VS $800 part. :)
