Major oil leak problem please help!!!

Ok I have an 82 rabbit diesel with an orginal engine. I was driving up to syracuse yesterday and noticed the oil light flickering. So I stopped and looked and found copious amounts of oil flowing out of the vacuum pump that supports the brake booster.

Previously I had a mojor problem with this pump as it would constantly blow the diaphram. In order to combat this problem I rerouted the hose that goes from the engine and the pump. The part that came out of the engine was rerouted to a oil container which allowed for gas to escape without oil leaking out. It was a very complicated apperatus. The suction part of the pump was left with a balloon with holes in it to allow air to come in and out. Any way yesterday I was horrified to witness oil to come pouring out of that balloon. So in attempt to save my car I connected the pump back to the engine despite the fact the brakes will most likely be hard again.

Does anybody know what happened? Did the diaphram simply break? If I put a new diaphram in will it give me my breaks back and make it drivable for a while again? Is my car dead? It still starts fine and drives strong. When I reconnected the pump oil loss also subsided.
