Mk3 gti brakes

This is a post for a friend:

"Did the mk3 GTi come with 256mm or 280mm front disc brakes and are they compatible with a mk2?"

He has an euro 84 mk2 gti I believe.

I have no idea what things are like in England, but in the US, all A1 and A2 GTI's were equipped with vented 239 mm front brakes. The A3 car was equipped with either 256 or 280mm brakes depending on the particular model. I think the 8V cars got 256mm whereas the VR6's got 280mm.

In the US, an 84 would be an A1 not an A2, but assuming it really is an A2 then the A3 brakes will fit, however...

You will need to replace the caliper, caliper carrier, hub, hub carrier, wheel bearings, and ball joints as well as the rotors of course. You may also need to replace the brake lines, and you should replace the master cylinder.

The 256mm brakes require 14" wheels minimum. The 280mm brakes require 15" wheels minimum, however, only some 15" wheels fit. You may need spacers on some 15" wheels, otherwise you will need 16" or more.

Ahh I see, once the 256mm system has been installed what would be required to upgrade to 280mm?

Just the calipers and carriers I suppose?

Oh I ment to say, do the mk3 VR6 have the same ball joints...etc as the GTi's?
