Muffler choice fro 98 GLS

Nov 29, 2003 2 Replies

Hi, I have a 1998 Jetta GLS w/2.0l. The OEM stock muffler(S) need replaced. They only lasted about 60K! All 3 VW dealers in my area want around $800 to replace them. I feel thats pretty outrageous for a stahdar muffler, even if it's 2 mufflers.

I have a freind who has a Techtonics who suggest that, but his car is way too loud for me. I just want something equivelant to the OEM.

So, is Midas, Tuffy, etc all crap? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What you'll find is that muffler shops within a chain aren't all alike. If they go with the absolute cheapest stuff, you'll notice that the pipes are smaller and it rusts out quickly.

It's possible they will offer you a choice, but unlikely.

You could be happy with a Midas cat back 'system' from one shop but it's possible you'll have my experience whereby they welded up the cheapest parts they could and it got load within 6 months.

2 years later I was replacing it again.

Did VW ever get with the program and put sta>Hi, I have a 1998 Jetta GLS w/2.0l. The OEM stock muffler(S) need

and look at the possibilities. I bought Bosal replacement parts for my 95 Golf from them, and the parts looked and fit exactly like the originals. However, portions of the original exhaust system were stainless, and the Bosal is all steel which will rust more quickly. I bought both mufflers, new hangers and clamps and it was something like $220.

If you are in an area where rust is a problem, you might consider the Techtonics stainlesss system. They have an option where you can add a resonator to cut down on the loudness. In addition, I think there are a variety of mufflers you could pick from.

From what I've heard Leistritz (sp?) is genuine OEM for VW. I don't know where you can find them though.
