Passat rear brake job

I tried changing the rear disk brakes on my son's 99 Passat, and used the universal piston tool that is supposed to rotate the piston back into the cylinder. I was able to turn the piston and must have rotated it at least two dozens turns while applying pressure but was not able to get the piston to go into the cylinder enough for the new pads. I don't think it moved into the cylinder at all. I had the lid off of the brake fluid resevoir. I believe the car has 4-wheel ABS. Anybody have an idea what I did wrong?

You must push & turn at the same time. Sounds like that's something the tool you have doesn't do!

It can stick - sometimes you need to wind it back out 1/4 turn & try again. I hope you released the fluid from the bleed nipple as you wound the thing back - if not you risk having trashed the ABS.

"if not you risk having trashed the ABS"

I never done that and have never damaged any ABS system. Even the VW manual mentions nothing of that procedure. Where did you find that suggestion?

The tool I have is a cube that fits the piston. I read that many others have had success with the same tool. I guess this piston is a bit harder. Will have to get a nicer tool. Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, my son was only home for Christmas. Will have to try again next time I see him.

Try Sears, as they at one time carried a kit for doing almost all cars with rear calipers.
