Plastic shield under engine on 2000 Golf

My son drove my Golf into a ditch today. There was no real damage except from the tow truck. His chain bent up a panel and he ripped off a plastic shield under the engine.

There is a plastic part that attaches to the bottom the front bumper. Another plastic part attaches to that plastic part and extends under the engine. The second piece was largely ripped off; presumably it caught on something while be winched out.

What is that part? How essential is it? What does it cost for the part? Where would I buy it?

As he is fond of telling me; his is an honor student, a recruited athelete, and an Eagle Scout. A few auto mishaps aren't all that bad. Today I am telling myself this over and over again; maybe I will believe it in a while.

Ted, I have a plastic engine shield under the passenger side of the engine in my Golf, which keeps water and debris from contacting the fan belts causing them to squeal. Can you go back to the ditch and retrieve this piece? Your Eagle Scout could easily re-attach it with a couple of sheet metal screws. You may be able to get this part at VW or the local car scrapyard.
