The dealer is wrong. It is the R232 or whatever scam. My '93 leaked all of the coolant, I refilled it and it leaked again. When I went in to get it checked. the first thing the dealer said was: gonna have to replace the whole thing. He didn't really care that all I needed was more coolant, he wanted to sell me new h/w which he knew I didn't need. Check the gaskets. That is the source of the problem.

As far as the shaking and stalling, you might have an EGR problem, or it could be overheating, which might also explain the A/C being flaky. They are easy systems for the dealer to test, I don't know why they wouldn't be able to figure it out. I agree with what's been said, find another dealer. Or, since the car's getting older, try to find a vw mechanic in your area. I've found some just by searching the internet. Also the car talk section of cars.com has a mechanic finder you can try.

And of course, the dealer is BSing you as far as the A/C components. Good luck.

What is the R232 ?

It's not leaking, before going to VW i went to a regular repair shop and they couldn't find the problem. But they confirmed that the system is full and NOT loosing coolant.

Now, when the A/C was functioning, there was a "click" every time I was turning the switch on (the clutch perhaps). I am no longer hearing that. I jumped pins 1 and 2 from the Hi-Lo switch and the "click" of the clutch was back again, only the system would blow warm air only. The thing is, after the visit to VW they may have removed the coolant ?

And by the way, I live in Reno, can anybody recommend a good mechanic?

Thanks,

C.P.

The coolant. I am not sure of the number but the thing is that the 'old' stuff is no longer available in the US and Canada (I am Canadian, eh) so if the h/w does not support the coolant, hello new h/w. But the new AC h/w came in about '92 or so. So you do not need new AC h/w.

BTW, most if not all of my responses are anecdotal and qualitative. I can help with the odd noise thing but there are other here that are vastly superior technically and will be able to help you. Good luck.

asdflkafkijafa HI! LOL! This doesn't mean anything either. :)

Dude, you might want to invest in a Bentley Manual or do a google search. See below..

This is the clue...

Here is a google archive of my post responding to someone who had the same problem you are having:

From: Peter Parker ( snipped-for-privacy@zero.com) Subject: Re: 96 Jetta A/C Stopped Yesterday Newsgroups: rec.autos.makers.vw.watercooled Date: 2002-08-07 16:29:36 PST

Now it just plain zero. :) I had to say that. Anyway. It's your temp sensor on the top of your driver side water flange which is connected to your head. I think it's about $12 or $14 dollars at the dealer plus the O ring for a buck or so. There are two sensors on the water flange and it is not the one with all of the wires point to the front.

Go to an A/C specialist and have your pressures checked. Basically experienced the same problem with my GTI VR6 95 and it was found that my High pressures were low and my Low pressures were high. Person said my expansion valve was shot and I need a new Receiver/Drier. Said my compressor should be fine as it wasn't making any noise. Did the engine hesitation occur simultaneously with the AC problems? If it did your AC compressor is going as it may be binding - any noises?
