Removing steering column boss on A2 GTI

Aug 24, 2004 2 Replies

Anyone got any tips on how to remove the steering column boss on a MKII GTI? The ignition switch has gone kaput and VW in their wisdom have designed it so you have to slide the ignition casting off the column to get the plastic switch out...doh! My 3 legged puller just keeps burring the edge of the sleeve - anyone tried using heat on this mutha?! I'm a bit relectant to go down this route because of the amount of plastic around.

TIA

Some use a puller along with some vise grips trying not to damage that piece much. ;-) This could be your method since you probably have the vise grips too! You have to clamp onto that collar or find something that fits in that groove! I wonder if you can find a muffler clamp or some other clamp that will grab onto that collar. Plumbing store maybe???

Good luck! later, dave Reminder........ Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them, and you have their shoes. Frieda Norris

That bearing puller looks the business as it fits all the way around the collar. I have some vice grips but they're not quite big enough, so an exhaust clamp might do it if it's man enough, however I have a feeling the torch may have to be used in combination with the puller to free it off. Will post to the group how I do it.
