starter problems 90 VW jetta diesel

Jan 21, 2006 4 Replies

I have recently replaced my altenator and starter in my Jetta. Everything seemed to be fine upon intial start but after listening closely I noticed a whirring noise coming from my starter. When I shut down the car it seemed as if the starter slowly whined down. Is this a faulty solenoid or is there a wiring problem somewhere?

It could depend if you hooked up the wires correctly. However I went through

4 "rebuilt" starters on a 85 golf diesel (same starter) that would last more then a week. But you definitely don't want the starter engaged all the time as it will wear out the teeth on the flywheel.

Did you replace the starter bushing in the transmission when you replaced the starter ? Your new starter should have come with a new bushing, and if it's not replaced you can get funny noises and/or premature failure of the starter itself.
