Possibly a rubber cushion/washer that was not installed with the cable. Something bent or broken or incorrect with the clutch kit? OR???
What do you mean by "Too much resistance"?
I guess I would try pulling the cable upwards from the trans to see if it was possible to do so. If so that might account for too much free-play.
AFAIK This must be the 2.0 engine with a self-adjusting clutch cable? The VR6 has an hydraulic system.

Is that something I can look for?
I feel like I'm pushing against a heavy duty spring. Best I can describe it.
It's a 1.8, yes self adjusting.

Did you install the clutch or someone else? Have them check it out again. It sounds like something might be binding the cable, or it might be an aftermarket one that requires some lubrication injected inside of it. NOT SURE!!
If this just happened and it was an instant change then I would suspect that the new clutch cable is breaking.
This is not a USA vehicle right? Did VW ever put a 1.8 >
I no longer trust the guys who installed the clutch kit so I wll take it elsewhere. Last time they wanted to take the top off the engine to diagnose an idling problem, quickly identified by someone else as a small tear in a hose.
I bit of WD40 at the engine end of the cable (where it passes through a cutout) made a small difference. Will get my engineer to look at it.
No it's a UK model, 1.8se. Thanks Dave.

Yep leave those guys alone! lol
Let us know what your engineer finds and good luck!
He said the clutch was fine. I guess I got over familiar with the hot-knife-through-butter clutch on the Honda I've been driving whilst this one has been off road.

Bought a 1986 GTI a few years back. It had a "new" clutch installed according to seller. It was stiff and would not release unless pedal to the floor.
Turned out to be the firewall support was weak. When clutch pedal was depressed, the cable housing was pushing into the firewall. Welded a plate for support and all was well.
