touareg...ahh the touareg!

volkswagen is selling the touareg to try and keep those former and current volkswagen owners "within the family..... before it became available, research was saying vw was loosing customers to the competition because they did not offer a sport ute comparable vehicle..... no comment here as to the reason people purchase this type vehicle but the hundreds of thousands purchased each year in usa were not able to even consider a vw vehicle prior to introduction. as the oldest of 7 children in my family,we never owned anything bigger than a 4 door sedan....without a/c or seat belts! always took a seat directly behind the driver's seat for limited access to hand slap across the filled back seat!

True. And the same idea applies to the Phaeton, as well. You can't blame VW for trying to keep up with market demand. Just my opinion, again, but I wish they could have remained a little more faithful to the VW way in doing so. The Touareg just isn't a "People's Car," and neither is the Phaeton. Of course, the last time VW tried to do a "utility" vehicle, we got the "Thing," so a different approach was definitely in order. But, I wonder if they might not have done this under a different brand name in the VW family, maybe even a new brand altogether. Or, since VW was late to the big-luxury-sedan and SUV party and were aiming at a moving target, if they might not have tried to jump way out in front of the pack with vehicles that are so extreme...

Maybe they'll do very well with them, but just judging from the numbers of them that I see on the road, they must be a little disappointed.
