Two issues - '86 Cabriolet

Having a problem with the turn signals on my '86 Cabriolet.

When I flip the lever, the indicator on the instrument panel goes solid, but the turn signal does not come on at all. When the lever is not flipped, there is a faint glow to the instrument panel indicator, visible only in low light, e.g. car in the garage, or at night.

The emergency flashers do work, however.

I replaced the flasher relay, even though I didn't think that was the problem. Everything is the same.

Ideas?

Other issue. The front seats are pretty worn. This is a Wolfsburg edition with 2-tone leather seats, blue and grey. I had the top and head liner replaced last year, and the guy said he could make new leather seats in front for $1000 each.

I've kept this baby going for 18 years now, and would like to keep her going. 110K miles. But given the past experience with my 77 Scirocco, I'm wondering if the clutch and transmission will be going soon. I'm hesitant to put 2 grand into leather seats if I've got another couple of grand coming up in repairs. Any suggestions on some covers for the seats that would look reasonably well?

Thanks for the advice.

Try slightly moving the hazard/emergency flasher switch to the on position. I have seen defective hazard light switches cause the turn signals not to work and cause that light to glow. Remedy is to replace the switch or keep it in a certain position. :-)

Thanks Dave, that's the problem. I'll keep the switch half way till I get a replacement.

in the aircooled bugs, if the fuse blew, the dash indicator wouldn't light with the lever. if you stepped on the brakes, it lit up. learned that one on an almost new '63, still true on my 79 'vert. had to buy a vag-com to take care of son's 98 nb. and wife's nb tdi in self-defense. always fixed them at home. hope to continue the tradition. built my own engines since 1964. got pretty good on all bosch fi systems, t3, cis, learning diesel. got a pic of my first experence with cts. rick
