My Golf had an Idle problem about 6 months ago, the idle just kept dropping below the idle point and the car would try an catch it but just end up cutting out..it was leake it was having breathing difficulties...

Took it to get the computer ran on it and was advised there is X amount of problems (cant remember what now) and going to cost =A38/900 for repairs..so went to another garage who charged me =A3150 and fixed the problem..for a while (2/3 months) it was fine and then started doing it again, asked the garage that fixed it, they advised something to do with the air/oil mix?? and just to rev the car every morning and that will clean all the rubbish out?? But the problem is still there and getting worse..any one know what i should do?

Had a service 2 weeks ago, with a new air filter going in, it was ok for a week but alls starting to go wrong again?? Dont want to go to VW as they want =A360 an hour to check the problem...Please help...thanks

check for vacuum leaks at the connections between lines and the devices. maybe a line connector on the air filter box that was moved during the filter replacement

After about ten mins its actually ok, so im not sure, not to sure of how to check/fix anythin, not mechanically minded, so if any further help available, that would be great, the problem was also there before the filter was changed..

Then it may be a faulty coolant-temperature-sensor (that is : when starting cold, everything works as normal with chocke/enrichment, but chocke/enrichment stays on even when the engine reaches normal operating temperature, about 10 min later; this leads to erratic idling with black smoke and gasoline odour at the exhaust...

It actually only occurs when starting the car...someone said to be airflow meter, lambda sensor, throttle body?? i aint got a clue! thanks for all the comments tho.

In any case maintenance is always good as a precaution; that includes replacing the air filter element, checking that the flap inside the air filter operates properly, checking the flap inside the air meter should travel freely, trottle body should be clean and free from oily deposits, idle stabilisation valve should be clean, spark plugs corectly adjusted and in good service condition, oil separator inside the valve cover should be free to let pass fumes...lambda sensor is probably referring to oxygen sensor and is normally monitored by a ''check engine'' light on the dashboard (the majority of those task are not difficult) Regards.
