previous radio problem with Tahoe

I previously posted about my '99 Tahoe's radio and CD sound going out. Well...it has magically come back on again. My SO kept trying it everytime we got into it to go anywhere and last night, it came back! My question is where is the amp located so we can trace down the probable loose connection? Is it a part of the radio/CD/Cassette unit or is there a separate amp? I am assuming that the speaker wires plug into the unit and we will check those as well. TIA Kathy '99 Tahoe

gm stopped using a separate amplifier in the full size trucks in 1995 with the dash style change. you now have the amp right in the radio. later models with On Star even package the On Star electronics in the radio itself.

Pull your cupholder (on the right) out and pull the hidden screws out there. now gently pull back the front dash bezel (it'll unclip). disconnect the air port at the base (if you have it) and remove it carefully.

notice the radio is held in with plastic "tangs" (not screws) Simply push down on the tangs and pull on them to slip the radio out. And you're right, all of the pwr/spkr connections will be on one plug (a 21 pin white plug with 3 sections).

I can guarantee there are no wiring problems....the head unit is flaking. for the cost of even a scrapyard piece, upgrade to just an entry level CD player and you'll thank yourself later....

Thank you so much! We will do that at the next opportunity and see what's going on. We don't have OnStar, but we do have the SCV feature. The CD player seems to be a separate unit located below the temp. controls. It came back along with the radio and cassette and all 3 have been working fine for the last few days. Since this is a leased vehicle, we are not going to be replacing it with an after market unit. It's a violation of our lease agreement. Your suggestion about a junk yard unit is great advice, however. Perhaps we can find a working one at some point before we return the truck. Kathy '99 Tahoe
