Service 4x4 Light is on? How to put in 4x4

This gonna sound stupid but I

just bought a 2000 Z71.. Will somebody give me the steps in putting in 4X4. I still have my 92 Z71 I like putting the lever in 4X4. This AUTO is different Do you put your truck in Neutral before you put in 4X high or 4X low. I see the N on the auto buttons. How do you use that. There is no Neutral button just the N letter.

Seems it don't always go into 4x H.. On my 92 the lights will come on on the panel by the shifter. 2000 there are no lights light up no where. How do you do it and how do you put it back.. I been playing with it. I just don't think I'm doing the steps right. I read in the book it reads don't put foot on the peddle when engaging??

I do have a Service 4X4 that does COM3E on sometimes.. I turn truck off and it don't come back on.. May not come on for a month.. May be something wrong with it.. Someone told me to change fuse. I did change the 4x fuse but it still comes on..

Sounds stupid I know but It's not going smooth with it. May be something wrong on it.

The Auto, 2Hi, 4Hi, 4Lo should light up when engaged. Except for N and 4Lo, you just push the button to engage. To get 4Lo, put the transmission in neutral and push the 4Lo button. To get N, push the 2Hi and 4Lo together for

10 sec. The red Neutral light should come on. If you're getting no lights at all, with a service 4x4 warning, odds are none of it is working except 2Hi. Probable the switch is faulty since it seems to be a weak point juding from the numerous posts here and other places.

My 2000 Silverado Z-71 4x4 LT Ext Cab had the Service 4x4 light come

on 3 years ago.. Problem was cold solder joints in the Push Button Switches.

Dealer replaced 4x4 push button assembly under GMPP Warranty. Has worked fine

since. Bad solder joints in 2000 4x4 push button switches is a KNOWN Problem.

I went and got the Switch today. It was $85 with taxes.... NOW I see the long cover that goes around the DASH. Does that whole peice snap out? Are there any screws holding it in? I lowered my steering wheel. When I pull I feel it giving. I just want to make sure no screws???

No screws. Pull gently with your fingers. You will probably need to set your emergency brake and then put the shifter (that is if it is an automatic) down into the 1 (low) to get the plastic surround out. I've had mine out many times.

Good luck, Karl
