305 SPARK KNOCK DRIVING ME CRAZY !

"I have a 1988 CHEVY G van it had a 350 in it the oil pump shaft broke ...For better gas milage I installed a rebuilt 305... Wow was that a lot of work ...It was identical to the 350 and bolted right in I installed all the original sensors just as they were on the original 350 engine ...I have two questions ...

FIRST The new engine runs great BUT there is a spark knock "ping ping ping" when I accelerate gently or go up a slight hill this lasts about two seconds sometimes I get a code 43 "spark knock " on the computer...It does this too when I accelerate with the cruise control ... I had two old original distributors and the new one I bought for the new engine ...SO I tried all three and re-timed the engine each time the knock is the same no improvement... I have installed all the stock computer ,ESC module and sensors from the original 350... I sure would appreciate any advice as to where my problem may be ? I sure don't want to damage my new engine !

MY second question is ... The original engine had another sensor that no one has been able to identify (so far)...This sensor is on the drivers side of the engine just under the front of the exhaust manifold it has a little flat brass top and the connector pushes on from the side ...This sensor looks like the Knock sensor but has this different brass connector top the wire is dark blue ... All of my manuals Chiltons, Haynes AND the Chevy shop manual do not show this extra sensor what is it ?

Electronic Spark Control Sensor has a dark blue wire feeding it.wire goes to pin "E" of the control module mounted on the fire wall. This could be your ping

After you get it going dont be surprised if you dont get your expected increase in fuel mileage. Along with tuneup make sure you are using at least mid grade fuel. Mine knocks a little too when I use 87 Octane. Also make sure the transmission is downshifting properly.
