yellow shift light driving me crazy

I removed the instrument cluster and removed the bulb from its socket. It took 15 minutes to get the cluster out, 10 minutes to get it put back together.

This is specifically in reference to an '03, but a '99 should be the same. Check the field service manual for your model year in the "Upshift Indicator" section of the chapter on the "Instrument Cluster".

The instrument cluster is comprised on 4 main components. There is a back cover, a 'cluster housing', hood/mask, and lens.

All the indicators, lights, and gauges are within the cluster housing which is a single part. Service is performed on this unit by replacing it when necessary. (I'm sure that piece costs a lot!).

The light for the indicators comes from individual LEDs mounted directly to a PC board. That PC board is connected to the powertrain control module (PCM) computer via a PCI (computer) bus.

In the event that you were willing to try and take apart the sealed unit that makes up the cluster housing you would probably find the LED difficult (impossible?) to remove without damage to anything else.

Since the cluster housing is attached to the computer via a computer bus rather than individual circuits you can't cut a wire on a harness either.

My 03 TJ has a tilt steering wheel. I adjust it so I can't see the arrow. n.

I believe the '99 still has plug-in incandescent instrument panel indicator lights like my '97 does.

That works for me on our Cherokee. The wheel covers the light perfectly.

Yeah - like the fact that the high beam indicator and cruise control indicator lights are NEVER on the dimmer circuit. Driving down the road at night with no streetlights, the brightest things in the dash are the damned indicator lights for the cruise and the high beams - they are nearly blinding they are so bright. On my old YJ, it was so bad that I disassembled the dash and pit a piece of tape with a tiny little hole over the light.

I heard of a guy that put his out with a .45. It was way too messy for most, but I wanted you to have all of the options.

Agreed. My TJ's high beam dash indicator light is way too bright. It is almost blinding when on a dark road. Have to adjust the steering wheel to block it.
