83 truck with ac problems

When I turn my ac on, My Compressor dosent come on. I can turn the compressor by hand but it wont kick on. There is two wires going to the top of the compressor and Im not sure if one of the wires is suppost to have 12 volts going to it or not. I checked both wires and nothing. Or mabey I overlooked another problem. Any help would be greatly appriceated. Thanks, Driscoll

Did you check fuses?

Driscoll,

The green wire in the A/C clutch harness should have +12V when the A/C switch is on, BUT if the system is low on refrigerant the low-pass cutoff switch will prevent the clutch from kicking on (0V).

You need to jump the compressor clutch directly to the battery using test leads. The post on the compressor that corresponds to the GREEN wire goes to positive terminal, the other post goes to negative terminal. If the cluch kicks on it means you're either low on refrigerant, the low-pass switch is shot, the A./C clutch relay is shot, or the climate control module is shot.

Best way to check is to measure low-side pressure with the compressor jumped.

Thanks Doc for the Info. I will try that and see if the compressor kicks on.
